Act like a Leader
By: Liz Pabon
The world of business is much like a
stage. We each play a specific role,
some leading others supporting while
others are extras. Like any good
performer, preparing for your role
is critical. Many leading men and
women share that to prepare for a
role, they research not only what
the role feels like but also what it
looks and sounds like. Every nuance
speaks to the unique language of
their character and ultimately, to
the success of the character itself.
In business, acting the part means
mastering the language of success
and projecting a Super-Capable
manner. A Super-Capable manner is
distinguished by three primary
characteristics:
Capable In today’s highly competitive climate, it is imperative that you have a sound understanding of your craft. There are too many people waiting for you to drop the ball so stay sharp! No more are the days when you can say, “I’ve learned all that I can.” Make honing your skills a priority as well as acquiring new and complimentary skills. If you’re a specialist in finance, what about taking a marketing class?
Vision Clarity requires that you become familiar with the history of your industry and have an understanding, or intelligent opinion, of future trends. Embrace change and be willing to start anew this will provide you with a winning edge against your competition. In other words, look beyond the job itself. Senior people are not the only ones with vision. If you’re not a senior person (yet) be assured that senior people will notice you and your vision.
Communication Being competent and having vision are essential but if you can’t communicate one or the other, you’re at a disadvantage. It does you no good to identify a problem and have the vision to embrace impending change if you’re unable to communicate. To make things happen, you must open up and talk! It is said that those who talk well thrive and those who talk best lead. If you struggle in this area, consider joining a group that will help you strengthen your communication power.
Think of Super-Capable as an added
value that makes you that much more
marketable. It is a success tool for
anyone that wishes to advance up the
ranks. You must know what you are
doing, and do it well; you must be
willing to embrace change; and you
must be able to intelligently
articulate yourself in front of
others.
