In my freshman year as a small business owner, I made all sorts of mistakes. Admittedly, I was stunned I didn’t make a hefty six-figure salary in my first year given all my fancy shmancy corporate success. Later, I learned that my expectations weren’t unreasonable but the plan I had in place (or lack of plan!) was unreasonable.

At the end of that first year, I searched for a clear path to success spending boatloads of money on coaching, workshops and other programs that got me little results.

It’s those frustrating trials and tribulations that led me on a journey to building my business in a way I had never experienced in the halls of corporate America.

But it Wasn’t Easy..

I had been trained that success is measured by the numbers - if the numbers don’t jive, you are in a heap o’ trouble. And my numbers didn’t look good as compared to what I had forecasted for my first year.

It’s no surprise since I wasn’t clear on why I was in business to begin with. I was building my business on auto-pilot following the model and methods of other small businesses.

Here’s what that looked like:

Charging too little for my services and working like crazy to please my clients
Not setting proper boundaries with my clients…and with myself
Networking at all the WRONG places
Giving my market what THEY wanted (which seems like the smart way to go) but not honoring what I wanted (my biggest misstep)
Setting reasonable expectations but having an unreasonable plan to get there (this is the kicker gals!)
Marketing with no passion, personality or pizzazz!
Being too formal in my communication and not establishing common ground
Hiding the best part of my business…my individual purpose

What is a Soulful Business™ Anyway?

After a soul-searching expedition that would make the likes of Jacque Cousteau and his crew look like amateurs, I discovered there were five solid, and soulful principles I completely left out of my business and is the essence of designing a Soulful Business™:

1. Establish Your Code of Conduct…

Without a clear vision and the courage to confront everything that can get in the way of that vision, you’re dreaming instead of putting steps into place to make your vision a reality.

I used to say that the #1 asset in your business is your brand. I’ve since revised that. The #1 asset in your business is YOU. Your skills as a Soulful Business™ owner and the conviction you have to see your dreams come to fruition is what will ultimately drive your success or keep you wishing for success. It’s time to develop a new inner code of conduct and today may just be that day for you.

2. Be Clear and On Purpose …

In my freshman year as a small business owner, I failed to get a crystal clear 360-degree view of my business objectives and while I was working hard, I was NOT working smart! I also did not take the time to discover nor connect with my true genius – that ‘thing’ I do unlike any other that is what brings me such great success today.

Many people fear putting themselves out there – you may be one of them – but you can’t have a Soulful Business™ if you make excuses or wait to be given permission to BE what is your divine right. Listen, you already come equipped with everything you need to be successful…you just need the tools to help you unearth them. And, I just so happen to have those tools at my disposal and want to share them with you!

Knowing your individual purpose (and you DO have one!) is the #1 element that can make all the difference in having just enough or creating abundance. And I've developed an easy-to-follow expedition roadmap that will help you discover yours.

3. Balance Assertion and Results with Compassion …

As a service provider, helping others is your passion yet knowing that and telling others this is your desire isn’t enough. Sadly, in an over-communicated, over-stimulated and over-promised society, those words have lost their meaning…on the part of your clients and on the part of those making the ‘service’ claim.

Here’s what I mean…

In a quest to make money through hard-nosed, brass tact marketing and sales methods you’ve shut off your feminine energy and given all your power to your masculine side.

Listen up gals you need both!

But, if you’re anything like me, you’ve grown tired of this in your face approach and don’t appreciate being bullied, threatened or insulted. Marketing your business in this way will NOT give you lasting results and isn’t necessary when there is another way. A way that is heartfelt, honest, as colorful as is your brand personality and delivers equal results with Conversationl Marketing methods that balance assertion and results with compassion.

Balancing these three "treasures" is how you create a steady soulful business and how you ensure you make your mark as a service provider. The 3 Treasures is an old principle that provides you with a NEW way to communicate - to market - your passion and is essential to your success.

4. Position Yourself in the Gap…

A powerful branding principle, few small businesses know how to position themselves uniquely, distinctively and in a way that gets the attention of their market.

A Soulful Business™ uses smart analytics to determine the needs of its’ market to identify gaps and then develops products or services to address those needs. And it's these analytics I'll be sharing with you as a Success Circle member.
